What is a HETAS sweep?
HETAS is the recognised UK organisation for solid fuel heating, including the registration of chimney sweeps and service technicians. A HETAS sweep is a professional chimney clean carried out by someone who has been trained and assessed to HETAS standards. It is not just a quick brush up the flue — it is a thorough service that includes inspection, testing, and documentation.

HETAS certificate and insurance
One of the most common questions I get is whether a HETAS certificate is needed for insurance. While every policy is different, many home insurers now include a clause requiring regular chimney maintenance. If a chimney fire or smoke damage claim arises and you cannot prove the flue was swept, the insurer may reduce or refuse the payout.
A HETAS sweeping certificate is the standard document insurers ask for. It shows the date of the sweep, the address, the appliance type, and the registered technician who carried it out. Keeping it with your household documents is a small step that can make a big difference if you ever need to claim.
How often should you get a HETAS sweep?
HETAS recommends sweeping frequency based on the fuel you burn and how often you use the appliance:
- Smokeless fuels: at least once a year.
- House coal: twice a year.
- Wood burners in regular use: every three months during the burning season.
- Occasional open fires: at least once a year, ideally before the first fire of winter.
