Chimney Cowl Fitting and Replacement in Worthing & West Sussex

A cowl is the cap on top of your chimney pot, and the cheapest bit of kit you can fit to keep birds, rain and downdraught out of the flue. Flue Fighter supplies and fits cowls across Worthing and West Sussex, HETAS certified and fully insured.

What a cowl fixes

Birds nesting in the chimney

Jackdaws drop sticks down an open pot every spring until the flue blocks. A bird guard cowl stops the nest before it starts, and is the only lasting fix once a nest has been cleared.

Rain coming down the flue

Water in the flue mixes with soot, stains the chimney breast and corrodes liners and stove components. A rain cap keeps the flue dry while still letting it breathe.

Downdraught and smoke blowback

Exposed chimneys, nearby trees and taller buildings can push air back down the flue. An anti-downdraught cowl steadies the draw so smoke goes up instead of into the room.

Disused chimneys

A capping cowl seals a flue that is no longer in use while keeping enough ventilation to stop damp building up inside the stack.

Choosing the right cowl

There is no single cowl that suits every chimney. The right choice depends on what you burn, how the flue is terminated and what is going wrong. A gas appliance needs a different cowl to a wood burner, and a chimney that suffers downdraught needs a very different top to one that simply needs a bird guard. That is why the pot and stack are inspected first, then the cowl recommended and fitted to suit, rather than fitting a generic cap and hoping.

If the flue has not been swept recently it makes sense to combine the two. See sweep pricing and ask about a cowl at the same visit.

What the job includes

  • Inspection of the pot, stack and existing cowl before anything is quoted
  • Advice on the right cowl for your appliance and the problem you are having
  • Cowl supplied and fitted, with the flue swept first where needed
  • Nest and debris removal where the chimney is already blocked
  • Smoke draw test after fitting to confirm the flue is clearing
  • Photos of the work at height so you can see what was done

Cowl work is quoted per job, because the price depends on the cowl itself and how the chimney is reached. Ask when you book and you will get a straight answer before any work starts.
