Sweeping chimneys in Petworth
Petworth is part of my regular Downs and rural west round, alongside West Chiltington and Fittleworth, so I'm out this way most weeks rather than making a one-off trip.
The town and its surrounding villages are full of listed stone cottages, Georgian townhouses and farmhouses with inglenooks and wide old flues. These need a patient, rod-and-brush sweep from the appliance upwards, with the pot and stack checked from the ground before I start.
Rural homes here often burn a stove hard all winter as a main heat source, so creosote builds up faster than in town. If you're lighting it most days from October, a sweep before and during the season keeps it safe and keeps your insurer happy.
